Oregon’s Rainy Day Destination: the Oregon State Expo Indoor Bike Park
The covered bike park area at the Salem Fairgrounds is open for business. The bike park area consists of a dirt jump line and a wood kicker to mulch landing. The dirt jump line has two options for skill levels: a beginner/intermediate and advanced line. When we arrived in the early afternoon on a Saturday, there were about 15-20 kids on BMX bikes riding the jumps in the dark. The lights in every other part of the facility were on, except for over the jumps. I spent the next 20 minutes or so searching for the light switches. The men's restroom ...
Sneaking into 104 Bronson- home of Santa Cruz Bicycles
Ok, they don't really make the bikes there, other than mocking up ridable prototypes like a bike we saw that looked like an suspiciously like an alloy Blur, but with really big wheels. It was a bike I wasn't allowed to pull the camera out for, as it was referred to as an experiment no one was supposed to know about. An experiment that ended up evolving into the 29er bike now known as the Tallboy. Cool. Related posts:Santa Cruz Session Santa Fe Freeride Sessions Spotted in Whistler: Rocky Mountain DH/FR Prototype
661 Gear Round Up: Select 2009 Protective Gear Reviewed
If you own body armor or protective gear you don for your mountain biking exploits, the name 661, AKA Six Six One is undoubtedly known to you, as they have become synonymous with protective gear for bikes- both motorized and non. This southern California company has made a major name for themselves manufacturing good quality protective gear, offered at price points your average rider can afford. While the Italian company Dianese occupy the higher ends (and price points) of the spectrum, brands like 661 and Fox Racing are what you see on the majority of rides at your local bike ...
Secret NW Trails II: Knappa
It has been pretty sweet having some of the best DH trails around only 10 miles away. After living in the Bay Area, and having Pacifica for the local stomping grounds and having to push up to the top every time you want some DH action, it is nothing short of pure awesomeness. The draw back? A short riding season. Related posts:Secret NW Trails: Long View, Washington Trail Review: Black Rock Trails
Secret NW Trails: Long View, Washington
Finding new spots to ride is always cool. One of the best things about being back in the northwest after a prolonged absence, is that a number of new places to ride have sprung up. We've lost some places too, but I'm all for celebrating the spots we have and working towards making the old ones better. Or even better, working to create new ones. And sometimes it is just a matter of being turned on to spots and scenes that are already there, and below the radar. While the Pacific Northwest is already known as a great destination ...

All the cold and wet winter riding here has us longing for warmer climes and sunny weather. It has been an interesting time, especially after not even having a winter last year, (that was nice!) and living in the moderate weather of the Bay Area for the last several years. For now, I’ve been content with a the occasional DH shuttle session at... [Read more of this review]
Everyone’s talking about it. This was the winter we were planning to make our first trek out, but like many we’re feeling the recession and are seriously short on ze cash. Basically we’re stuck inside looking at all the same websites as everyone else, looking at what the kids in So-Cal are doing and reading about various pilgrimages... [Read more of this review]
Portland and northwest area freeriders, downhillers and dirt jumpers have yet another destination to add to the list for weekend shredding. With 80 acres of private bike park action, NWSoF offers the biggest bicycle skills camp in Oregon. Our favorite secret trail in Ashland, Oregon, while not being at all that secret, has received an upgrade. One of the most enjoyable sections of trail now features actual jumps. Ashland is known for fun and fast lines, but the trails are lacking in providing actual air time. (Which is why the also secret Wagner Creek system in Talent is favored by the... During the last rainy day spell, Inga and I were feeling so cooped up, we decided to take a day trip to Seattle to play at the Colonnade Bike Park. Inga has been dying to get some more time in on dirt jumps, and with the backyard looking like mini-swimming pools and mushy, and the Salem Fairgrounds Covered Jumps in construction limbo, playing under... On our way up from southern Oregon we stopped off at the Salem Fairgrounds to see what the status of the covered bike park area was. There aren’t a lot of covered areas to ride in the winter here in the northwest, so knowing these jumps are happening could be relevant to our sanity in the coming winter months, as it will be my first winter in...
