Eugene, Oregon has always had a thriving BMX scene, and moving here to go to school at the University of Oregon ended up shaping my future as a rider of bicycles. The BMX track at Autzen Stadium was the center of much of the scene then, (and probably still is) and the place where budding freestylers learned [...]

A backyard with a view

Last Friday night was a good one. Riding bikes with some cool dudes in one of the sweetest, most photogenic pump track backyards to date will do it. This backyard with its mounds of carefully shaped soil in the shadow of Mount Diablo  ranks up there on the wish list of any mountain biker. (although [...]

Zen garden of awesome: pump track sweetness in Santa Cruz County

Pump tracks, backyards, bbq and beers always equal an awesome time. Sadly, it has been a while since I’ve ridden a cool pump track. While they are really popular in the northwest, I haven’t really ridden that many since coming back to the Bay Area. I’m guessing this is likely attributed to a few things: one, [...]

Backyard Spotlight: Izaak’s Pumptrack

If you can’t live next to an epic route or killer dirt jump trails, the next best thing is having enough backyard available to build your very own pump track. That is exactly what my brother Izaak did. A few years back, after hearing about my visit to the holy grail of pumps also known [...]

Grassroots Cycles and the Ranchstyle Slopestyle

Originally published on MBAction.com 5/21/10 Matt and the Grassroots Cycles crew have been building trails and jumps on a piece of property they own for about 7 years. They’ve done what many riders only dream up, and created their own private riding spot. These days the private bike park is known as the Ranch, and [...]

The Backyard Blam Pump track

The weather here in the northwest is starting to be livable again and now that the sun is back out and hopefully sticking around for a bit, it means it is time to get the BBQ fired up, put some beers on ice, grab the shovels and head to .. the backyard? Jared invited me [...]

Can the Grotto Trails be saved?

I just got off the phone with Shad Johnson of GoodsBMX where we discussed the possible demise of the classic dirt jump spot, the Grotto. At the moment, it appears that there is a strong possibility that the jumps will be plowed. Due to complaints by one of the local residents, the dirt jumps have [...]

Backyard bikepark project: Phase II begins

After the experience of clearing brush and building a pump track almost completely solo, (and by hand, at that) I knew that mechanized tools would be required to create a private bike park in the backyard that would live up to the vision I have. The plan all along has been to bring heavy machinery [...]

The backyard bike park project

All you need is dirt, water, some tools, and a lot of time. The plan: create the most awesome backyard possible within the given amount of time and resources. Seeing as I’m currently in transition and have a healthy amount of downtime in the Astoria area while looking for work in Portland,  moving a ton [...]

Backyards full of awesome

At this point, it would be surprising it you haven’t at least heard about the pump track phenomenon sweeping the scene. It’s for good reason too- pump tracks are super fun, and not only provide a great way to build handling skills, but they don’t require as much space as dirt jumps.
