Night riding at Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland, CA

in Blog,East Bay

We recently relocated back to the Bay Area and have set up a home base in Oakland, California. The other night we met up with fellow PDX transplant Cedar Kyes for a night riding session in Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park. JMP is located in the east bay hills of the bay area, and lies in the middle of a substantial amount of green space. Unfortunately, the majority of the space doesn’t allow riding on anything but wide, natural surface roads, making JMP a small oasis of legal single track. While there aren’t a lot of (legal) trails available, Joaquin Miller does have a few great patches of riding, although during the day, it receives heavy use from hikers, runners, dog walkers, as well as mountain bikers.

We sessioned the rock water fall on the Big Trees Trail for a bit before ripping a few runs down the Cinderella trail with the lights. Good stuff. Stay tuned for a full review of the trail system.

Actually almost ALL the trails in Joaquin Miller Park (except for Lower PC, Wild Rose & Fern Ravine) are open to cyclists. JMP is an Oakland City park and unlike the surrounding EBRPD allows bikes on narrow trails. However unlike EBRPD riding in JMP at night is illegal. Local cyclists have been working in Oakland for many, many years to keep legal singletrack open in JMP. The local mt bike club, Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay (www.btceb.org) has a National Mountain Bike Patrol in the park (www.oaklandbikepatrol.com), has spend hundreds of hours maintaining the trails, and partnering with the City, local land manager, and other user groups. Please follow the rules or stay home!

You heard it here people, we stand corrected. Night riding at JMP is discouraged— please refrain from riding JMP after dusk. There are also speed limits for riding in the park, note that shredding the downhill sections of trail is also discouraged. A bell is also a good idea for riding in the park, to warn other trail users of your approach.

Please also note that any single track located on the other side of Skyline Blvd in Redwood Regional Park offers a different set of rules. http://www.ebparks.org/parks/redwood

Apparently night riding is allowed on the “double track” aka dirt roads. However, any (desirable to ride) single track trails in the EBRPD are off limits to cycling, and come with a hefty fine if caught.
