When I drove by this practically abandoned BMX park in Beaverton last week, I had to stop and record some images on my iPhone. I was at once excited and more than a bit bummed to see it. It is clear that Tualatin Parks and Rec maintains the park from the recently mowed lawns. However, it is clear that the park gets minimal use, as grass has over grown most of the lines. And who can blame the local neighborhood kids from not riding their bikes there all the time? The jumps are so worn down they obviously aren’t as fun as they could be. There appears to be some use, but they probably haven’t ever ridden a real BMX park before, and have no idea what an untapped resource they have beneath their tires.
Eichler Park Bike Jumps, as they currently are.
This could look like...
How hard could it be to contact the land manager at Parks and Rec, and get the ball rolling? From the posted signage, it already is an official bike park.
Take another look at what the park could be like if we worked with the Parks Department to rebuild the jumps and add a pump track.
This! A quick mock up of of the potential this location has for kids of all ages.
I believe this lawn is part of the park. It isn't a ton of space, but I could still think of a million different ways to utilize it.
The phone number to Tualatin Hills Parks and Rec was on the sign, so I picked up the phone and started asking questions. Namely, “what will it take to get this park refreshed and revived for a new generation of riders?” I was directed to the Center Supervisor, and tonight I’ll be writing an email to see what I can do to get the ball rolling.
What it could look like with rebuilt table tops. (quick Photoshop mockup)
Will update this post when more information comes in.
Update: August 18, 2010
Yesterday marked meeting number two with Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation, and while the progress is slow, it has definitely been made. The Risk and Contract Manager as well as the Athletic Facilities Coordinator were in attendance, with Joe Barcott representing the NWTA, and myself representing, well, the people that want a place to ride. An MOU was discussed for the potential partnership between the NWTA and Tualatin Hills.
This is very promising, and while we still can’t put a time line on when we’ll actually break ground, I’m currently researching specs for jump sizing and spacing to pass on for the dirt placement.
What will we need?
Basic BMX track Specifications say that a typical BMX track requires 2,000 – 4,000 cubic yards of dirt. That takes about 150-400 dump track loads depending on the size of the truck. Our site is going to be much smaller than a typical BMX track, with a focus on dirt jumps and skill building as opposed to competitive racing. If we were able to source 2,000 yards of dirt, it would be incredible, but realistically we can get by with less. 750 cubic yards should get the ball started, and still be enough soil to crown the runway between jumps, humps, and rollers for adequate drainage. For soil, we’ll need a clay based dirt with a mix of loam, without any rocks in the mix.

Let us know if the GFRA can assist with the digging once you get a green light to move forward on this! 17+ Qualified Trailbuilders at your service.
Wow, there is some serious potential there. Can’t believe it’s been overlooked like that. Wouldn’t take much to get that thing it good shape.
I’m psyched on the feedback I’ve gotten thus far. We’re going to need more dirt to do this right! Two or three dump truck loads dropped in the right spot and an army of dudes with shovels, and this area would be a thing of beauty.
Having an earthmover on hand would be ideal. Either way, I’ll bet this project could be knocked back in a weekend or two with the right planning.
NWTA is in. Let us know how we can support the project. As I mentioned last night, one of our members, Joe Barcott, is on the THPRD bike-ped committee and should have some connections there. I’m sure we can find some dirt.
There’s a similar situation at Dogwood park in Cornelius. Wouldn’t be to hard to give that one some love too, once the momentum is going. I will rent the Bobcat. Just need to get organized and get some time off from work……..
I’m stoked to get working on this, I’m missing ye olde pump track back at Ray’s MTB. And I could work on my jumping skills a bit too, the only thing that sucks is I started to part out my dual slalom bike, and now I’m going to rebuild it!
I talked to them months back and found the key contacts to be:
Mark Hokkanen – Risk Manager (Incredibly helpful and knowledgeable IMO)
503_629_6305 x2943
Scott Brucker (superintendent of Parks)
503_645_6433 x1645
I’d do anything to give the place a face lift for this summers riding.
Nice work Jason, the Eichler has some serious potential.
Also ther is a spot in Forrest Grove. Abandon Dirt jumps next to the skate park
IF YOU CAN GET THE APPROVAL WE WILL BE DIGGING OUT A JOBSITE IN BEAVERTON, OFF ALLAN AND HWY 217 AND WILL HAVE APPROX 14,000 YRDS OF DIRT, WE CAN DISCUSS DUMPING SOME OF IT FOR YOU AT THIS SITE
This reminds me I think I show a simular place in Longview, WA. Where they had built a bmx jump area only to let it go fallow.
This would be a great resource to get rebuilt!
Good dirt would be great. We’re still in the middle of the process, but things look positive and appear to be moving forward.
this is so great to see. i went to the park the other day, and was doing some research to try to get the park redone when i found this. would be great. hope it comes through!
I have gone by this place before and thought the same thing, I’m glad your making an effort to fix it. I know one person Isn’t alot, but let me know if I could help in any way.
Technically this is a project being pursued by the Northwest Trail Alliance. The goal is to adopt the park under an adopt-a-trail agreement similar to what BRMBA has achieved with the Salem Expo Dirt Jump Park. As I’m (regretfully) moving back to the Bay Area, I am currently looking for the community to step up and help the NWTA make this project happen, as I will be unable to continue as the project lead. I’ll continue to post updates, and work dates when they happen, but officially this will be the first project undertaken by the NWTA’s new Gravity Committee.
Anyone looking to get more involved, please attend the next meeting for the Northwest Trail Alliance.
I JUST heard about a pump track/BMX track in Beaverton yesterday. Did a little Google searching and found this! So it DOES exist. Sorta.
My son has discovered BMX (me too) and we’re jumping into this with both feet. I’ll be getting in touch with the NWTA soon to let them know I’m interested and see if I can help keep things going.
I remember when i was younger we potitioned to have this site built… originaly it was a lot bigger… it was more of a race style track… then the following year they cut the size down in half and made it into more of a trail jump track… but over the years people have lost interest and have stoped ridding there…would be great to see this place back up and running again…
hey, I live right around the corner from this park. I have ridden it since I was a little kid. I have seen the days where it used to be something. To see all the potential that the track has and had is very different. Anyways, I have been working on them when it was not raining and I feel that I am making a little headway. But I feel that there needs to be more man power than what I have had. Also, I was wondering if you know anything about the grass that is behind the large corner in the back. Please email me back and tell me if there is anything I can do. I am very good at building jumps and corners. I am willing to do anything to save the track.
We’re waiting to see an MOU from THPRD so that we can formally adopt this park and re-build it. Our plans are for a wholesale re-engineering on the site. Please keep an eye on the NWTA website for updates. Hope to have info in the next month or so and be building spring/sumer.

My kids and I went by to see about riding there. We would be willing to help out if the schedule fits. Thanks,
John
THPRD Just cleared the way for rebuilding! We have starteed building and will build a pro , intermediate and beginners line! Next work party is tomorrow! Should be finished by july 15th 2011
I would love to come help, whats the adress?
I am stoked this has been turned back into some good jumps! I remember back in the day when these were some dang good jumps! And now they are again.
I’m really glad this track has been rebuilt. I went there a few times with my kids about 18+ months ago, but the ruts were so bad, that they couldn’t use it safely. As soon as my daughter’s newly sprained wrist heals (and if the rain hasn’t come back yet!) we’ll be there, enjoying the results of your hard work.
Thanks a lot!
man that’s really cool and all but, when are city’s going to learn that most people want to ride a park, not a dirt track that would have been cool in the 70′s. I don’t understand why there are some many great things for people that skate and anyone that rides bmx is SOL… I think everyone that rides bmx in Oregon needs to take a stand and realize it’s BS and, discrimination that skaters are the only ones that get indoor parks, skate churches, skate only out door parks, all founded by some sort of tax payer dollars.
