Red Devil Trails

A few saturdays ago I drove down to Union City to check out the Jam at the Red Devil Jumps. It was a rather happening event, and the riders were going off, with flips, tail whips, 360s, superman airs, no foot can-cans, you name it. The locals were throwing down. It was pretty sick. I tried to get into it a bit, but with 10-20 riders shredding the main line, I held off on working my through until after the jam went down.

The bummer of it was that once the Jam wound down, everyone took off. By the time I put the camera down, everyone had taken off. I sessioned the first four sets and after casing the fourth set a few times, called it a day.

Last weekend I finally made it back for another session. The day's crew consisted of Chipper, So-Cal Brandon, and myself. We met up at Shells for a warm up session before driving over the bridge and down to Union city. They guys went right to it while I chilled out and waited for my taco bell lunch to settle a bit before pulling my kneepads on and getting my bike off the car.

The riding primarily consists of one long line that starts on a bike path. You have plenty of space to get speed (or too much speed) I was amused to see Brandon fly right through the first few sets, and grunting stuff like, "whoa," and "oh geez." He was totally off balance, and still made it through the pack with no problem. Nice.

It got me stoked and after a few runs I finally made it past the fourth set that had given me trouble the first time I rode here. The fifth and sixth dubs weren't problems either, and I was set to clean the main line until I had a bad run, and came up a bit short on the fourth or fifth set, and packed it good. In the process I jammed my ankle for the third time in about as many weeks and received a nice case of pedal bite for my efforts. I was done for the day, so I traded the bike for the camera and worked on documenting the boys as they rocked the trails.

no foot can

Chipper whips the second set while Brandon knocks out a no-foot can-can over the fourth set. Or was it the 5th set?

Brandon here was a trick machine and began listing off his repertoire. The guy has got some skills. Tuck no-handers, suicide no-handers, no foot can-cans, supermans, a tail whip.. I began to lose track. Unfortunately, the lighting in the enclosed wooded area makes for a hard time getting the shots I wanted. Time to start saving for radio slaves and additional flashes.

tuck no hander
This guy has a mean bag of tricks. Old school tuck no-hander over the 5th set.

After the first eight sets, the jumps spread out a bit and continue until you come to a quarter with a wood wall ride.

In ideal conditions, one could hit the wall and come back the direction you came, hitting 4 more sets and ending with the rather large trick set pictured below.

Another angle on the trick set during the jam..puts it in perspective..

Another option is from the main line is to veer right off the 4th set heading down to this big-ass booter. It's pretty big.
